Identity is the New Currency

2 min read

You know that one friend who records everything? The internet is that friend. Except it never forgets, never deletes, and never asked if it was okay. We scroll past it. Every day. Because we think we're too smart to be scammed. We are. The scam just doesn't look like a scam anymore.

A hacker wearing a hoodie is not the greatest danger to your identity. It's the system you've always had faith in. The internet wasn't designed to protect you, It was designed to collect you.

It’s story time!! The kind that happens every single day-

A small business owner in Jakarta built everything from scratch. One morning he got a call from a bank about a loan he never applied for. Then another. Then a legal notice. Someone had used his national ID, his address and his business registration, scraped from a breached government portal, to open credit lines across three cities. It took him 18 months to clear his name. His business did not survive the wait. He was never told his data was exposed. He found out the way most people do, when the damage was already done.

The real problem isn't hackers. It's centralisation. Every system we use today is built on the same flawed blueprint - your data lives on someone else's server. Your identity is managed by someone else's platform. And centralisation has one fatal weakness. It creates a target and attracts hackers. One server. Millions of records. One breach. Millions of victims. You have no sole right to your own data. When the target exists, someone will eventually hit it. Always!

The solution isn't better locks on the same door. The solution is removing the door entirely.

For businesses, the next breach isn't just a PR problem. It's a legal one. When money was at risk, businesses built vaults. When data became valuable, businesses built firewalls. Identity is now the target, the solution already has a name. It's called SSI.

Under GDPR, a single breach can cost up to 4% of global annual turnover. Compliance isn't optional. And fines are just the beginning - customer trust, once broken after a breach, rarely fully recovers.

This isn't a startup pitch. This isn't a whitepaper gathering dust. The world's most credible bodies have already moved -

  1. The UN declared digital identity a fundamental human right and endorsed SSI as the global model by 2030.
  2. The EU mandated the Digital Identity Wallet for 450 million citizens by 2026.
  3. The World Bank is actively funding SSI infrastructure for 850 million people with no legal identity.
  4. W3C published Decentralised Identifiers and Verifiable Credentials as official global standards.

The governance is there. The standards are there. The technology is there. The mandates are already written. This isn't the future of identity, this is the present for everyone who decided to pay attention. And in a world running on data, Identity is the new currency.

Identity infrastructure is what we build, and these are the questions we work through every day.

If they touch your roadmap too, we would like to hear from you.
